Camp History

camphistory.pngPine Ridge Day Camp is located on the site of the former Pine Hill Day Camp. Purchased in November 2007, the camp has undergone additions and renovations over the years to increase camp activities for the summer camp and offer year-round services, including an equestrian program and facility rentals.

Camp Milestones

The following are some of the major milestones, improvements, and additions that have been made at Pine Ridge Day Camp.

  • Since December 2007 – Installed approximately 10,000 feet of wood fencing in and around the property.
  • February 2008 – Added an indoor boot room and viewing lounge in the indoor arena.
  • March of 2008 – Enclosed the dining hall facility, added heating/cooling and interior tongue-and-groove pine walls.
  • March 2008 – Converted the original farmhouse on the property to be a fully-accessible bunkhouse which sleeps 10.
  • March 2008 – Constructed a new fishing dock at the lake which is partially covered.
  • April 2008 – Enclosed the open-air changing area and converted it to a fully-accessible restroom facility, which included four stalls each for men and women along with six changing stalls each for men and women.
  • April 2008 – Added a petting zoo to the activities offered at the Camp.
  • April 2010 – Added a full-service serving bar to the dining room.
  • February 2011 – Installed a sunken stage and wood benches at Council Circle.
  • March 2012 – Added a certified 30 foot climbing wall and 400 foot zip line to the adventures available at the camp.
  • April 2012 – Added bathroom facilities at the lake. These facilities were constructed primarily of cedar harvested directly from the property.
  • May 2012 – Added a wheelchair-accessible wooden walkway from the lake bathrooms down to the water front.
  • October 2012 – Replaced the old indoor arena surface with 250 tons of sand and installed a watering system to keep the dust down.
  • April 2013 – Added a regulation jumping arena in the back of the property.
  • April 2013 – Added the following high ropes elements: Pamper Pole, Giant Swing, Giant Ladder, and Multi-line Traverse.
  • April 2013 – Added a low difficulty climbing wall, along with a 100 foot zip line for the younger campers.
  • April 2013 – Added paved walkways to the camp to increase the accessibility of the property.
  • May 2013 – Added a functioning vintage blacksmith’s shop for performing demonstrations.
  • June 2013 – Installed automated gates at the camp property entrances to increase security and improve safety.
  • October 2013 – Added lighting to the jumping arena.
  • April 2015 - Added a slingshot range equipped with safety glasses, Barnett Cobra slingshots, and safety shooting line.
  • May 2015 - Added a treehouse overlooking the challenge course

Equestrian Program

The following are some of the major milestones for the Equestrian Program:

  • 2013 – Began showing in the Alabama Hunter Jumper Association.
  • November 2013 – Concluded a very successful first season in Auburn at the Year End show.

About the Owners

Pine Ridge Day Camp is affiliated with the Centers for the Developmentally Disabled North Central Alabama, Inc. (CDD NCA), a non-profit agency that provides employment training, social interaction, day habilitation, early intervention, residential programs and other services for individuals with intellectual, developmental, and/or physical disabilities. In addition to traditional summer camps, CDD NCA also sponsors camp programs specific for children with disabilities, as well as a Special Olympics equestrian team.
