Unplugged at Camp: why is it important?

Posted by on 27th Oct 2015

At Pine Ridge Day Camp & Equestrian Center, one of our camp policies is that we do not allow electronics such as cell phones or MP3 players for either our campers or our staff members. One of the many questions we receive from parents in response to this policy can be summed up in one simple word, “Why?”

In a recent study conducted by psychologists with The New York Times, research concluded that “if you don’t regularly exercise your ability to connect face to face, you’ll eventually find yourself lacking some of the basic biological capacity to do so.” On average, kids today spend a total of seven and a half hours a day, at minimum, using some sort of electronic device. We believe it is important, for several reasons, that children and adults alike unplug from their devices and simply enjoy the great outdoors and the company of those who are with them.

While we are not denying that there are many wonderful uses for technology, we believe there is a time and place where technology is appropriate to use and that place is not summer camp. Going to summer camp is an opportunity and adventure unlike any other. Kids get to try new things, conquer their fears, are faced with new and exciting challenges, and they also make life-long friends and memories.

Pine Ridge Day Camp & Equestrian Center understands that, often times, many parents want their children to have electronics, such as cell phones, for safety reasons. They want to be able to check in with their children and know if they have arrived at their destination safely. However, at Pine Ridge we can assure you that our campers are playing safe and being taken care of by exceptional counselors who have received hours of hands-on training. If a situation arises in which a parent needs to be notified, one of our leadership staff members will contact the parent immediately. Each of our staff members carries a radio, or “walkie-talkie,” so they can stay in constant contact with all members of our team in case of an emergency or if a situation arises.

We live in a world where we can retrieve information all over the world within seconds with just a simple click of a button, which is an incredible feat. However, summer camp is a place where kids should be able to escape the demands and stress which stem from the quick-paced, modern society in which we live. At Pine Ridge, it is our mission to give children the opportunity to experience all the fun and adventure the great outdoors has to offer and make friends and memories to last a lifetime.

“Thank you to all Pine Ridge Day camp staff for helping my son S. grow in skills and confidence this summer. He’s a great swimmer now and approaches new experiences with enthusiasm. Many Thanks!”
