The Benefits of Camp

Posted by on 21st Sep 2015

What did your children do this summer? Did they sit at home and never look away from their laptop, X Box, iPhone, or tablet? Did they binge-watch Netflix? If so, do you wish there was a way that you could get them excited to be outdoors, away from the distractions of technology? I'm here to tell you that it is possible! If you are familiar with Pine Ridge Day Camp & Equestrian Center then you know that our focus is to give everyone the ultimate camp experience. After all, we are the place for fun and adventure! Kids NEED camp. Some people may say, “I never went to camp and I turned out just fine.” That may be true, but there are several benefits to going to camp. According to the 2010 American Camp Association (ACA) Camp Compensation and Benefits Report, each year more than 11 million children and adults attend camp in the United States. The top five camp activities consist of the following: recreational swimming, arts & crafts, challenge/rope course, archery, and aquatic activities. Did you notice something about these activities? Pine Ridge offers all five!

Of course, a very important question to ask is, “What do parents think about camp?” According to a 2005 ACA report, parents state that the following are the most important reasons for sending their children to camp:

1) camp helps build self-confidence and self-esteem

2) camp is a safe environment

3) camp is a place to build social skills and make friends

Parents also reported the following on how the camp experience helped their children:

Camp helped them…

1) feel good about themselves

2) gain more self-confidence or self-esteem

3) increase independence and show more leadership skills

4) increase their friendship skills and feel more socially comfortable

5) increase their sense of adventure and willingness to try new things

I have heard from a number of our camp parents who have nothing but positive comments about Pine Ridge. One mother said,

“Our family has been with Pine Ridge forever! *Lucy went from K-10th and *Andrew has gone K-8th as well. My kids have always had fun but I have to say this was the best year ever. Everyday *Andrew would get in the car and I would receive a 10 minute rundown of the day’s activities. He loved their home in the woods, the building a sailboat out of a canoe, the games, Marco Polo in the pool and so much more. I asked *Andrew why this year was awesome and his answer was L, his counselor. L really bonded with my son […] while pushing him to try as much as possible and in general made sure he had a great time every day” – Arlene M.

Another mother stated,

“You guys are really awesome. My girlies loved camp and can't wait to go again next summer. *Alice gained so much confidence in such a short time…Have been telling everyone we know about camp!” – Osie A.

One other mother said this about her daughter’s experience at camp:

“She absolutely loved camp! I fully expect her to be back next summer. Thank you for providing a safe, clean, happy, healthy, and super fun place for kids to spend the summer. It sure makes me feel great about sending *Macy there knowing she is having fun OUTSIDE being active. She's with friendly, polite counselors and has healthy options in the cafeteria. Thank you and your staff for all you do and how much you care about it!!” – Karen M.

In conclusion, sending children to camp is very beneficial. They gain various life skills, meet new friends, and gain an appreciation for the great outdoors. Why not supply your child with the experience of a lifetime?

“Thank you to all Pine Ridge Day camp staff for helping my son S. grow in skills and confidence this summer. He’s a great swimmer now and approaches new experiences with enthusiasm. Many Thanks!”
