It’s not enough to be a good leader in today’s world. We need great leaders, but what makes a great leader? A great leader positively influences, empathizes, innovates, and is passionate about what they do. A great leader does not ask anyone to do anything that he/she would not do himself/herself. How do we create great leaders? The answer is simple…

Start with young adults.

Where do you send young adults for such training? I’m glad you asked. The best place for this is Pine Ridge Day Camp where teens can participate in a Counselor-in-Training program. What is a Counselor-in-Training? Our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program launches the transition from campers to potential staff members. CITs follow a dynamic Pine Ridge curriculum designed to teach them about child development, behavior management, communication, decision-making, and leadership. The CITs receive mentoring, weekly evaluations, and gains meaningful real-life experiences. Our CIT counselor will teach them the necessary skills to be successful as well as mentor and encourage them to strive to be their best. Now, as a parent, you may read this and think, “Well, my child isn’t interested in being a counselor in the future.” That may be true. Not everyone is meant to be a camp counselor. However, everyone can benefit from our CIT program. The training that CITs receive can be used for much more than a job as a camp counselor. The program focuses on training teens to be great leaders and expanding their current strengths. Kids and teens are expected to do so much more than has been expected of them in the past, so why not help them achieve those expectations? Teach them. Train them. Give them resources that will better them more than they ever could have expected. Doing so will transform our young adults into successful, hard-working adults that will be our leaders. I’m sure we can all think of a few leaders in our lives that might have done a better job if they had received the correct training. Let’s start with our young adults. Let’s show them how to work well with others, be creative, work hard, help others, and so much more. You can provide this bright future by starting with Pine Ridge’s Counselor-in-Training program. If you have any questions about the program, please call our office at (256)778-9999 or reach us via email at info@pineridgedaycamp.org.

*CIT applicants must have completed the 9th grade.
